BEST TIME TO VISIT HIROSHIMA

Although the prefecture of Hiroshima is mostly mountainous, the winter season in the city receives not much of snow. Anytime can be the ideal time to visit Hiroshima; it will largely depend on what you want to see and experience in the city.

Spring

Spring starts in March and ends in May. This time of the year is the busiest as this is also the time when the cherry blossoms bloom, usually early April. You may find the city crowded, especially the areas around the Hiroshima Castle, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Shukkeien Garden, and Hijiyama Park. If you want a relatively tranquil sakura viewing spot, you may do so at Ushitayama, but you need to put on your hiking shoes. Outside the city, Miyajima is another popular sakura viewing spot.

If you are going in early May, you can also catch the Hiroshima Flower Festival, which runs from May 3 to 5.

Summer

Summer starts in June and ends in August. This time of the year is the hottest and have the highest occurrence of rainfalls. Normally, accommodations are cheaper during this time. If you are not used to the heat or you want a comfortable stay, make sure to book a room with good ventilation and air conditioning unit.

If you are visiting in August, you can participate in the Peace Memorial Ceremony, which is annually held on the 6th of August at 8:15 AM, remembering the nuclear bombing incident. At night, a great number of colorful lanterns illuminate the river.

Autumn

Autumn starts in September and ends in November. This time of the year has cool and dry weather, except for the typhoons that usually come in September. See the beautiful colors of autumns as the leaves start to turn into red, yellow, and orange hues.

Catch the Sake Festival (early October) in Saijo, about 30 minutes train ride from Hiroshima Station, and the Food Festival (late October), held at the Hiroshima Castle ground, extending to Chuo Park.

Winter

Winter starts in December and ends in February. Winter season in Hiroshima is normally dry and not too cold. Explore the city and go on a food trip, trying its famed okonomiyaki. Note that in Japan, most museums, if not all, are usually closed from December 29 to January 3. Check the museum schedule before you go.
